Meriday drove his cruiser at a prowler’s pace over the dusty lot, searching for anything that would clue him in on the whereabouts of his deputy. Weeds surrounded the boarded-up fabrication building. The current owner didn’t seem to be in any hurry to develop the property.

He drove around to the back of the warehouse and parked. Beyond the overhead door stood a green steel door, chained and padlocked. He left his vehicle and strode to a small, dusty window and peered in.

Dark. Empty. Silent.

He walked the perimeter of the building.

What had Ada Whittaker been alluding to when she advised him to ask Simon Hilton about the warehouse? And that phone call Bidwell took last night, was that the reason he was absent today, or had something completely unrelated detained him?

A trail of matted grass led him to a dumpster buried in the tall growth. The putrid odor of rotting food stung his nostrils.

After a cursory search of the area, Meriday walked to his car.

He stood with his hands on his hips and scanned the horizon while a breeze off the lake swirled around him. Boaters on the far shore undocked their crafts and headed out into the rippling water like all the world could sing, unaware his deputy was missing.

He jolted at the ring of his phone. “Yeah?”

“His pickup is in the driveway,” Sloan said, “but his cruiser is gone. I checked all the windows. There’s no sign of him.”

Meriday ended the call with an odd mixture of fear and anger. Did the kid get into something he couldn’t handle? So many rookies thought they could manage calls on their own, then ended up doing something stupid.

He popped two more antacids and turned. The sun glinted off something tucked deep in the thickets. He squinted and shaded his eyes with his hand. His heart stopped. The reflection bounced from a side mirror of a cruiser.

He edged toward the vehicle.

At the open window, he leaned in. Nothing lay on the seat but a crumpled Chick-fil-A bag. Meriday opened the door and gave the cruiser a solid search. A sniff of the drink in the cupholder revealed lemonade.

He turned his attention to the ground around the vehicle. Matted, damp leaves gave no evidence of a scuffle. He moved deeper into the woods, walking circumspectly and calling Bidwell’s name.

Each pause to listen yielded the rustling of leaves, the caw of seagulls, and the distant murmur of boat engines, but no response.

“Where could he be?” Meriday looked back at Bidwell’s squad car.

Goosebumps lifted the hair on his arms.
